Five governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State have passed a vote of no confidence in the state chairman of the party, Dr. (Chief) Moses Alake Adeyemo, and demanded his immediate resignation over alleged acts of bias, imposition and poor leadership.
The aspirants made their position known in a communiqué issued at the end of a meeting held on Monday, June 1, 2026, where they reviewed the affairs of the party and recent activities under the leadership of the state chairman.
The communiqué was jointly signed by former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Rauf Aderemi Olaniyan; Engr. Oyedele Hakeem Alao; Barrister Akeem Agbaje; Dr. Ololade Usman Bakare; and Prince Musbau Asatola Asanike.
The aspirants accused Adeyemo of undermining internal democracy, fairness and unity within the party, alleging that he directed local government party chairmen to work for the victory of a particular aspirant before the conduct of the governorship primary election.
According to them, such a directive amounted to a gross abuse of office and a violation of the neutrality expected of the party chairman. The aspirants also faulted Adeyemo for allegedly declaring an aspirant as the party’s governorship candidate before the National Working Committee (NWC) officially announced the result of the primary election.
They argued that the action pre-empted due process, created confusion among party members and eroded confidence in the party’s internal mechanisms.
“Only the National Working Committee has the constitutional mandate to announce the results of the governorship primary,” the communiqué stated.
The aggrieved aspirants further accused the chairman of attempting to impose a candidate on the party after a Sallah meeting with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, alleging that he granted media interviews and publicly presented an aspirant as the party’s flagbearer.
They cited the chairman’s public gesture of raising the hand of an aspirant as evidence of partisanship and bias.
Drawing lessons from the party’s defeats in the 2019 and 2023 governorship elections in Oyo State, the aspirants warned that divisive actions and perceived injustice could further weaken the APC ahead of future elections. “We lost not because our ideals were weak, but because division, imposition and injustice weakened our ranks,” they said.
The aspirants also alleged that the chairman failed to convene meetings with governorship aspirants during critical stages of the election process and that inadequate election materials supplied from his office disrupted voting during the governorship primary and disenfranchised delegates.
They expressed concern over what they described as the growing defection of party members to other political parties, attributing the development to dissatisfaction among loyal members who allegedly feel sidelined and neglected.
The aspirants consequently called on the APC National Working Committee and other stakeholders to intervene by ensuring the immediate resignation of the state chairman.
They maintained that the future of the party in Oyo State depends on transparent leadership, adherence to due process and fairness to all members.
The five aspirants, however, reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and progress of the APC, insisting that lasting reconciliation could only be achieved through justice and respect for the party’s rules.
