One of the greatest tragedies of local government administration in Nigeria is that the tier of government closest to the people has, for too long, been denied the independence required to fulfil its constitutional mandate. Councils established to provide primary healthcare, basic education, rural roads, markets, sanitation and community development have been reduced to mere appendages of state governments.

It is against this background that the commitment by the All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Candidate in Oyo State, Distinguished Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, PhD, to grant full financial and administrative autonomy to local governments deserves the attention and support of every well-meaning citizen.

This is not an empty campaign promise. It comes from a man who understands local government administration from practical experience. As the Chairman of Ibadan North Local Government in 1992, Senator Alli witnessed firsthand the transformative power of a functional grassroots government. He knows that genuine development begins from the communities, not from the state capital.

His pledge to respect local government autonomy reflects both experience and conviction. It is the promise of a leader who appreciates that democracy flourishes when governance is taken closer to the people.

Throughout his distinguished public career, Senator Sharafadeen Alli has earned a reputation as a lawyer of exceptional standing, an astute administrator, a seasoned legislator and a disciplined public servant.
