Today, June 25, 2026, marks six years since Senator Isiaq Abiola Adeyemi Ajimobi, the first democratically elected governor to serve two consecutive terms in Oyo State, bade farewell to the world. As Oyo State, Nigeria, and countless admirers remember him on this solemn anniversary, it is fitting to reflect on a life that was defined by ambition, resilience, service, leadership, and an enduring commitment to the progress of society.

Born on December 16, 1949, in Ibadan, Abiola Ajimobi’s life story remains a testament to the possibilities that hard work, determination, and vision can create. From humble beginnings, he pursued education with diligence and distinguished himself in the oil and gas corporate sector before venturing into politics. His successful career in business equipped him with managerial skills, strategic thinking, and a deep appreciation for accountability, qualities that would later define his approach to governance and public service.

Ajimobi’s political journey was not without challenges. Though he became a Senator representing Oyo South under the Alliance for Democracy at first attempt, like many great leaders, he encountered setbacks and disappointments, especially during his governorshipaspiration. Yet, he remained steadfast in his pursuit of public service, refusing to allow temporary defeats to derail his aspirations. His perseverance eventually paid off when he emerged as Governor of Oyo State in 2011. Four years later, he achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first governor in the state’s democratic history to secure a second consecutive term in office. This achievement was not merely a personal victory; it was a reflection of the confidence many citizens reposed in his leadership and his vision for the future of Oyo State.

His years as governor were marked by a determination to transform the state and reposition it for greater development. Across Ibadan and other parts of Oyo State, infrastructure projects became visible symbols of his administration’s agenda. Roads were constructed and rehabilitated, urban renewal initiatives changed the landscape of the state capital, and efforts were made to improve public facilities and restore order to public spaces. His administration sought to modernize governance and create an environment that could attract investment, stimulate economic activity, and improve the quality of life of ordinary citizens.

Beyond physical infrastructure, Ajimobi’s government invested in sectors such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and security. He believed that development required strong institutions and effective governance structures. While not every policy enjoyed universal acceptance, his administration was widely recognized for its focus on discipline, planning, and long-term thinking. He was a leader who often demonstrated the courage to make difficult decisions, convinced that leadership demanded responsibility rather than the pursuit of popularity. This willingness to act according to conviction sometimes attracted criticism, but it also earned him respect among those who believed that meaningful progress often requires bold choices.

What made Abiola Ajimobi particularly remarkable was his understanding that leadership extends beyond the exercise of power. He possessed a charismatic personality, an engaging sense of humour, and a remarkable ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. Those who worked closely with him often spoke of his confidence, intellectual depth, eloquence, and generosity of spirit. He was a devoted family man, a mentor to many younger politicians and professionals, and a benefactor whose acts of kindness touched numerous lives beyond the public eye.

Even in death, his influence continues to resonate. Six years after his passing, many of the projects initiated during his administration remain visible reminders of his time in office. More importantly, his tenure continues to shape conversations about governance, development, and leadership in Oyo State. His place in history is secured not only by the distinction of being the state’s first two-term governor but also by the lasting impact of his contributions to public administration and state development.

The life of Senator Abiola Ajimobi offers profound lessons for present and future generations. His journey teaches the value of perseverance in the face of adversity, demonstrating that success often comes to those who refuse to surrender their dreams. His career illustrates the importance of courage in leadership and the necessity of making decisions based on principle rather than expediency. It reminds us that public office is ultimately a trust that should be measured by service and impact rather than personal gain. Above all, his story affirms that while power is temporary, legacy endures. The offices one occupies may pass away, but the influence one leaves behind continues to shape lives and communities long after one’s departure.

As family members, friends, associates, political allies, admirers, and the people of Oyo State remember him today, they are reminded that greatness is not measured solely by achievements or titles but by the difference one makes in the lives of others. Senator Isiaq Abiola Ajimobi lived a life of purpose, ambition, and service. He experienced triumphs and challenges, victories and controversies, yet through it, all he remained committed to the ideals he believed could advance his state and country.

Six years after his transition, his voice may be silent, but his contributions continue to speak. His memory remains alive in the institutions he strengthened, the infrastructure he helped build, the leaders he mentored, and the countless lives he touched. A testament to Abiola Ajimobi’s mentoring legacy is having two of his mentees, who played active roles in his administration, Bimbo Adekanmbi (former finance commissioner) and Open Salawu (former special adviser on works) as governorship candidate and running mate respectively in the opposition Allied People’s Movement being spearheaded and sponsored by Governor Seyi Makinde. As history continues to assess Abiola Ajimobi’s place among Nigeria’s political leaders, one thing remains undeniable: Abiola Ajimobi left an indelible mark on Oyo State and on the hearts of many who encountered him during his remarkable journey on earth.

May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and continue to comfort all those he left behind. Though he has departed from this world, his legacy remains a lasting testament to a life spent in pursuit of service, progress, and excellence.
