The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has warned masquerades and their followers against engaging in violence during and after this year’s Egungun Festival, stressing that violent conduct is punishable under the law.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Spokesman, Chief Adeola Oloko, the monarch described the Egungun Festival as an annual cultural and traditional celebration that has been observed by the people of Ibadan from time immemorial.
Oba Ladoja said the festival is dedicated to celebrating the customs, traditions and heritage of the people, while also promoting social cohesion, family unity and solidarity through traditional rites and sacrifices.
According to him, the festival provides an opportunity for the people to reflect on their history and celebrate their cultural evolution through drumming, dancing and merriment.
The monarch, however, cautioned that the festival should not be used as an avenue to settle old scores, engage in supremacy battles or carry out retaliatory attacks between masquerades and their opponents.
Oba Ladoja assured residents that the palace had put all necessary measures in place to ensure a hitch-free celebration this year.
He also called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order throughout the festival.
The Olubadan further directed masquerades and their followers to adhere strictly to routes, locations and timelines approved by security agencies to ensure a peaceful and successful celebration.
The Egungun Festival is scheduled to commence in Ibadan today, Monday.
