Senator Sharafadeen Alli, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Oyo State, has called on Governor Seyi Makinde to facilitate the passage and domestication of the Tax Harmonisation Law, citing growing concerns over multiple taxation, arbitrary levies and alleged extortion of traders, farmers and transporters across the state.
Alli expressed concern over what he described as the Oyo State Government’s lack of commitment to the legislation, which is intended to streamline tax administration, eliminate unauthorised collections and protect businesses and individuals from multiple taxation.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his campaign organisation, Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation (SSACO), the APC candidate alleged that farmers transporting agricultural produce from Oyo North to Ibadan and traders moving goods across the state were subjected to multiple levies by non-state actors allegedly operating as revenue agents. He said the affected individuals were frequently confronted at roadblocks mounted by the collectors, who allegedly harassed and extorted money from them under different and often questionable tax subheads.
According to Alli, the practice imposes additional financial burdens on farmers, transporters and small-scale business owners, increases the cost of commodities and erodes the already narrow profit margins of those engaged in legitimate economic activities. He argued that the continued imposition of multiple levies on the movement of agricultural produce and commercial goods undermines the state’s business environment and places unnecessary pressure on ordinary citizens.
The APC governorship candidate maintained that the domestication of the Tax Harmonisation Law would provide a framework for coordinated tax administration across state and local government levels, eliminate arbitrary collections and curb the activities of unauthorised revenue collectors. He regretted that Oyo State had yet to demonstrate what he considered sufficient commitment to the enactment of the legislation, despite complaints about multiple taxation and alleged illegal revenue collection along major transportation routes.
Alli also noted that some other states had already passed the legislation, while others were taking steps towards completing their respective legislative processes, urging the Makinde administration to take immediate action rather than allow the situation to persist. The APC candidate assured residents that the legislation would receive priority attention under his administration if elected governor in 2027.
He specifically pledged that the Tax Harmonisation Law would be passed within his first 100 days in office, describing it as a necessary step towards establishing a tax system that protects farmers, transporters, traders and consumers while supporting business growth.
Alli said Oyo State needed a tax administration framework that encourages economic activities rather than imposes additional burdens on businesses and citizens.
The statement was signed electronically by Bisi Oladele, Director of Media and Publicity, Senator Sharafadeen Alli Campaign Organisation, and dated November 8, 2026.
