The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has condemned what it described as unethical practices by some tertiary institutions in the implementation of the Federal Government’s Student Loan Scheme.

In a public notice signed by its Director of Strategic Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, NELFUND expressed concern over reports that some institutions have either delayed or refused to refund students whose tuition fees had already been paid before the Fund disbursed loan payments on their behalf.

The agency also decried arbitrary increases in tuition fees and other institutional charges, warning that such actions undermine the objectives of the Student Loan Scheme.
According to NELFUND, the scheme, introduced under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was established to remove financial barriers to higher education and not to impose additional burdens on students.

NELFUND disclosed that it is engaging the affected institutions and relevant authorities to ensure that eligible students receive due refunds and that institutional charges remain fair, transparent, and consistent with the goals of the programme.

The Fund reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and preserving the integrity of the Student Loan Scheme.
