Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s victory in the Ekiti governorship election was not a hard-fought, nail-biting contest. It was a comprehensive rout of the opposition.

Out of 375,777 valid votes cast, the APC candidate secured a staggering 319,224 votes, representing approximately 84.95% of all valid votes. His closest challenger, the PDP candidate, polled 40,543 votes (10.79%), while the ADC candidate managed 12,872 votes (3.43%).
The margin of victory tells an even more remarkable story. Oyebanji defeated his nearest rival by 278,681 votes — a margin that is larger than the total votes received by all opposition parties combined.
The governor’s victory was not confined to a few strongholds. He won across all 16 local government areas of the state, demonstrating an unprecedented level of acceptance among voters irrespective of political, religious or geographical considerations.
The statistics reveal that this election was effectively over long before the final declaration. When a candidate secures nearly 85% of the vote in a multi-party election, the result is no longer merely a victory; it is a referendum on his administration.
For the opposition, the outcome is a sobering reminder that elections are won not by noise on social media but by building grassroots structures, connecting with voters and presenting a compelling alternative. The combined votes of all opposition parties amounted to just 56,553, far below the APC’s tally.
Ekiti voters have spoken loudly and clearly. Their message is that they are satisfied with the direction of the state under Biodun Oyebanji and want continuity rather than experimentation.
The election may have produced one winner on the ballot, but it has also produced a challenge: the governor must now justify this overwhelming mandate by ensuring that every community, every ward and every household feels the impact of the confidence reposed in him.
An 84.95% mandate is not just a victory. It is history.
