Senator Fatai Buhari has attributed the recent attack on communities in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State to a lack of timely intelligence and community reporting.

Speaking on the incident on Arise Televisioninterview, the senator described how armed attackers invaded schools in the rural communities of Yawota and Esinhele, abducting pupils and leaving casualties in their wake.

According to him, the attackers abducted nine pupils from Yawota. He disclosed that a teacher who attempted to escape through a window was shot by the assailants, while an okada rider was also killed after the attackers allegedly mistook him for someone pursuing them.

“Schools in rural areas are usually made up of three or four classrooms and are located in remote areas. From Yawota to Esinhele is about five to seven minutes’ drive. The bandits picked nine students from Yawota. One of the teachers was trying to escape through a window and the bandits shot him. There was an okada rider who was dropping somebody from Yawota to Esinhele. The bandits thought he was chasing them and they shot him,” Buhari said.

The senator further revealed that there were warning signs before the attack, but they were not reported to community leaders or security agencies.

He recounted the case of a local woman who sold beans and bread and suddenly began recording unusually high sales shortly before the attack.

“Two days before the attack on Yawota and Esinhele communities, a woman who usually made about ₦1,000 to ₦1,500 daily from selling beans and bread suddenly began making between ₦10,000 and ₦20,000. She thought business was booming and did not report the unusual activity to community leaders. Sadly, those spending the money were terrorists conducting surveillance ahead of the attack,” he said.

Buhari stressed the importance of community vigilance and intelligence sharing, noting that suspicious movements and unusual activities should be promptly reported to relevant authorities to help prevent future attacks.
