The member representing Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives and senatorial candidate for Oyo South, Hon. Remi Oseni, has called for greater government intervention to reduce the cost of cancer treatment, particularly for indigent Nigerians.

Oseni disclosed that he sponsored a motion on 7 May 2025 at the National Assembly, urging the Federal Government to intervene and subsidise the high cost of cancer treatment for poor and vulnerable patients.

According to the lawmaker, the motion was subsequently passed by the National Assembly, underscoring the need for stronger government support for Nigerians battling cancer.

He noted that cancer treatment remains financially burdensome for many families, with the cost of essential medicines, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other forms of treatment placing enormous pressure on patients and their relatives.

Oseni expressed concern that some patients are forced to discontinue treatment because they cannot afford the associated costs.

“Cancer affects both the rich and the poor. Yet, many families struggle to afford essential drugs, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and other forms of treatment,” he said.

The lawmaker stressed that access to healthcare should not be determined by a person’s financial capacity, urging the Federal Government to introduce sustainable interventions that would enable indigent cancer patients to access life-saving treatment.

He said that while Nigerians should continue to pray for the healing and recovery of people battling cancer, government must equally fulfil its responsibility by providing a healthcare system that gives citizens a fair opportunity to access treatment and survive the disease.

Oseni reiterated his commitment to advocating policies and legislative interventions that prioritise the welfare, health and dignity of Nigerians. He said people-centred representation requires lawmakers to identify challenges confronting ordinary citizens and pursue practical solutions through legislation and government intervention.

Oseni is currently the senatorial candidate for Oyo South, following his representation of Ido/Ibarapa East Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
