A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State loyal to the party’s state chairman, Michael Okunlade, has rejected claims by Oloye Saheed Oladele, the Baàmẹ́kọ́ of Ibadanland, that he has been adopted as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election.

Speaking during a meeting of the faction, a representative of the Oke-Ogun zone stated that the region would not support Oladele’s governorship ambition under the SDP, insisting that he belongs to a different faction of the party.

The speaker further argued that Oladele neither obtained the party’s nomination and expression of interest forms nor participated in the party’s convention, making any claim to the governorship ticket invalid.

Another member of the faction urged Oladele to abandon any expectation of securing the SDP governorship ticket, advising him instead to remain committed to the party and support its growth ahead of future political aspirations.

Members present at the meeting unanimously affirmed Michael Okunlade as the party’s governorship candidate and pledged their support towards ensuring his success at the polls.

The development comes amid growing divisions within the Oyo State chapter of the SDP over the party’s leadership and preparations for the 2027 governorship election.

May I raise certain contradictions emerging from this news report? In the first place, Hon Michael Okunlade is the name of the former SDP Chairman, Oyo State Chapter, who had paraded himself as the consensus guber candidate at the middle of May this year. This news report has quoted him as Hon Michael Ogunlade. Okunlade or Ogunlade? Why the misnomer if the name refers to the same person?
Another case is that the said Hon Michael Okunlade only emerged a self-imposed consensus candidate through a kangaroo means without obtaining any nomination or expression of interest form from the National Secretariat of the SDP, Abuja. His goged intention was self-announced and imposed. So, it has no legal backing or that of the party structure.
On the other hand, Oloye Saheed Oladele, Baameko of Ibadanland, has duly obtained the expression of interest and nomination forms from the constitutional ly-recognised structure of the party. He has thus been announced by the national and state party structures and in the mainstream media to be the consensus guber candidate in Oyo State.
Any contrary opinion to this popular truth becomes ultra vires sine dine.

Thank you for making these observations. In the spirit of balanced reporting, we published the report that Saheed Oladele had been picked as the consensus candidate. It’s just fair to also report the faction that rejected his candidacy when we got the report. I would advise that you make counter report. Ours is to publish reports as we get them without bias.
