The Court of Appeal in Abuja has unanimously dismissed an appeal filed by the Turaki Group challenging the judgment of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, which recognized the Abdulrahman-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caretaker Committee.
In its ruling, the appellate court held that the appeal had become academic and did not raise any live issue requiring judicial determination.
The Federal High Court, Ibadan, had in January this year declined to recognize the executive committee that emerged from the Ibadan convention organized by the Turaki Group. Instead, the court affirmed the legitimacy of the Abdulrahman-led Caretaker Committee, which subsequently conducted the party’s National Convention that produced the current members of the National Working Committee (NWC).
With the dismissal of the appeal, the Court of Appeal has effectively upheld the earlier judgment validating the Abdulrahman-led Caretaker Committee and the processes that led to the emergence of the present PDP national leadership.
The ruling is expected to further strengthen the legal standing of the current PDP leadership amid lingering internal disputes within the party.
